Hydrating Water Essence is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 80.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good texture & Smell I bought this last week and have replaced my previous toners from other brands. This works wonderfully. I use it as both a toner and serum. I'm putting in another order today because I've started using this as a serum for dry winter skin too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A little goes a long way. I love this stuff! I use it as a toner before my makeup and at night after I cleanse to refresh my skin! It smells great and a little goes a long way. I would highly recomend it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cuuuute It’s very lightweight and hydrating, gave my skin a healthy glow that I got compliments on. I thought it was a spray, but I think I’m happier with the gel like consistency. It may not be the most ideal thing to compare it to, but I like it waaaay better than the tarte Rainforest of the Sea Drink of H2O moisturizer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love this stuff! I seldom leave product reviews, in fact this is the first Elf product I've ever purchased. I purchased a second bottle to give as a gift and became worried that I wouldn't find another for fear that it may be discontinued (originally purchased from T.J. Maxx). So happy that I can purchase it from here. Feels great going on and skin looks great!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very good! Helped with my acne and balanced out my skin. I have combination skin and the dry spells I go through with that are almost gone.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Disappointed I ordered this online a week ago. Shipping was great and came 2 days earlier than expected. I was excited to try this product but extremely disappointed. The lid was stuck on the spraying part. I tried removing the lid for half an hour and even asked my family to try. To no avail, the product was unusable. The lid did not pull off or budge at all. The lid only twisted off with the entire top still inside the lid. I don't know if the product actually works because I could not remove the lid to use it. Not worth 10 dollars. The coconut spray is better and actually usable.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Should have bought 2 I normally use the Daily Hydration Moisturizer but i find lotions can feel heavy, however this product is great to use in between. It is lightweight , dries fast and feels like a glass of water for your face. I apply it with a cotton ball then finish off with the Prep & Hydrate Balm for a natural dewy look

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Favorite budget essence Adds a wonderful hydration layer that’s perfect for your skincare routine. Great absorption. A must have for those with oily and combo skin. Feels very refreshing and does not leave an uncomfortable residue. I bring another bottle with me that I’ve decanted into a travel size whenever I’m on vacation and I get sunburned. This helps a lot with the post peeling and uncomfortable itch too.

What percent niacinimide is this?

Asked by: Erica N
We consider this a trade secret. The exact amount of ingredient in our products are chosen to be effective, safe and a great value. We love to hear feedback on how to continue to make our products even better.

Is this basically a toner?

Asked by: Ice Princess
An essence is a layering product that you put on after toner and before serums and moisturizer. A lot of the frustration I have with some of these reviews is that this is NOT meant to be a toner, nor a stand alone moisturizer. You use this in conjunction with your toner and moisturizer to deliver a more potent dose of beneficial skincare ingredients to the skin (in this case hydrating ingredients). The magic of essences is that you can choose a specific formula with particular ingredients to address specific skin issues that your other products can't address alone. Essences are your friend, buddy.

Mine just arrived. Should it look cloudy? Or have small items floating in it? (not air bubbles but something white).

Asked by: Mechellebelle
It should look relatively clear in the bottle (considering, of course, that the bottle is frosted), especially when it's still. When you shake it, it looks like it has little air bubbles suspended in the esscence that can look white. When you pour some in your hand, however, it should be completely clear. If not, contact customer service and ask for a replacement.

Why is there fragrance in this? I was really excited to try it until I read the ingredient list. Fragrance does nothing for the skin and it stops a lot of people with sensitive skin from being able to use it.

Asked by: CARAD2015
I'm not certain why they chose to add fragrance, but it is rather unfortunate. It sill surprises me that there are people, even in the cosmetics industry, that don't understand that the ingredient "fragrance" is usually made up of many additional ingredients, any one of which could irritate sensitive skin. But sadly labeling laws allow companies to avoid listing the ingredients in their fragrances for proprietary reasons, which means that people with sensitive skin have no way of knowing if the product is actually safe for them to use. Hopefully elf will reconsider their decision to add fragrance to this product and change the formula. I'd rather deal with my products smelling weird than know that someone else could get hives just because they were looking for a good quality, inexpensive product.

So... when purchasing this product would I need to buy any other's that go with this or can it be used as a standalone moisturizer?

Asked by: HottskullxD
You will probably need another moisturizer since essences generally don't provide enough moisture to be used on their own. They are designed to lightly hydrate the skin before you apply your serums, that way you still get the benefits of the serum, but don't have to use as much of it. If you don't use a serum it might be better to just get one of the regular moisturizers. I'd also recommend putting this essence in a small spray bottle if you decide to get it. That will make it easier to apply and save you the trouble of using a cotton round. I hope this helps.

I already have (and love) the Soothing Serum. This product sounds similar in terms of what it does. Is this an alternative to that? If I used them both, which should be applied first?

Asked by: RhiRhi
Forget the word toner. Cleanse then a Hydrating Essence these have much more skin loving ingredients and helpful ones to fight free radicals the best and only time they can truly be absorbed is just after you've cleansed face slightly damp apply a few drops to a thin cotton pad press into skin I start at the apples of the cheeks the face shows the damage first and forehead then move the cotton pads along your face then discard. Never apply Essence with your hands ever it's wasteful and by doing so you changed how the product was ment to penetrate the layers of your skin. If you want the products to work use them correctly.
